If you are interested in being part of a medical team, providing vital imaging services to physicians with state-of-the-art equipment, a career in cardiac sonography could be for you. Medical professionals who work in this field are called echocardiologists and are specially trained in the use of hand-held technology that produces and records images of the heart and its movements. These devices are known as transducers, and they use sound waves to create multidimensional pictures and videos doctors can use to diagnose and treat patients.

The Cardiac Sonography Degree Program at the College of Health Care Professions combines online training, residential classrooms, and clinical hands-on training designed to help prepare you for a career in cardiac sonography in as few as two years. Through a combination of classroom theory, laboratory training, and practical clinical experience, the degree program includes instruction in the specific knowledge and technical skills you need to pursue a career in echotechnology. Medical professionals will work directly with you to provide instruction on performing proper echocardiogram procedure, maintaining accurate patient records, performing cardiac ultrasounds, understanding summaries of medical findings, assisting physicians in medical diagnoses, and providing compassionate and effective care to patients.

As with all healthcare career fields, demand for trained and certified echocardiologists is high. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics*, job openings for cardiac sonographers, technologists and technicians are projected to grow 10% through 2032 – a much faster than average pace. Overall, employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 12.6% from 2021 to 2031*, much faster than the average for all occupations.
