POTENTIAL CAREERS
Potential Careers
As you develop skills and gain real-world experience as a medical assistant, it’s only natural to start thinking about what other possibilities you can explore. The great thing about healthcare is that it is always evolving, with a wide range of paths to explore, no matter what your interest or passion.
Whether you want to build on your education, earn a new certification, increase your pay, or pursue personal growth, here are some ways you can further your career:
- Get certified. Earning your Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Certification is the surest way to show employers that you will be ready to work on day one. This certification shows you are capable of handling general, clinical, and administrative tasks.
- Specialize in the Field. There are several types of settings in which you can apply medical assisting skills. With opportunities in OB-GYN, pediatrics, cardiology, emergency care, and more, you can tailor your career, education, and certifications to your goals and interests.
- Train other medical assistants. If you are a natural leader who enjoys teaching others, you can develop the skills to train new workers at your organization. You can also aim to teach a certification program or medical assisting classes at a local college.
- Become an office manager. Medical assistants who are highly organized and enjoy working in office environments can become office managers in all types of clinical settings. Another benefit of earning your CMA is that you can prove you are qualified for office manager roles.
- Further your education to further your career. Medical assisting is a great choice for students who want a foundation in healthcare on which they can build toward advanced roles. Many degree programs and medical schools require completion of clinical hours for acceptance. Your experience as a medical assistant can be the perfect way to prepare for the next level.
CHCP, founded by physicians, has been educating students for allied health careers for over 35 years.
